About Griffith University

Basic information and contact details for Griffith University

institution

Griffith University is one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary institutions and an influential contributor to education and research in the Asia–Pacific region. A relatively young university, Griffith has grown from its home at Nathan to encompass five physical campuses across South East Queensland, with more than 50,000 students and a network of over 200,000 alumni. Today, Griffith is known for its high-impact research, outstanding student experience—both on campus and online—commitment to social justice and welcoming environment, and ranks among the top 2 per cent of universities worldwide.

Research for a brighter future

Conducting impactful, socially relevant research is central to Griffith’s values and success, and the University is home to more than 1,700 experts making innovative discoveries and unlocking new knowledge. Some of these include:

  • trialing a cutting-edge Strep A vaccine, which could protect against multiple strains of the potentially deadly bacteria
  • using nasal stem cells to find new ways to treat spinal cord injury and improve quality of life for people across the globe
  • discovering the world’s earliest-known stone age surgery and reimagining the possibilities of ancient medicine.

Griffith is one of Australia’s leading research universities  rating well above world standard in at least 20 fields of research according to the latest Australian government evaluation ‘Excellence in Research for Australia.*

Griffith works across disciplines, fostering partnerships across institutions and international borders, bringing together the right teams to answer the challenges of today and tomorrow. Areas of strategic focus include:

  • climate action
  • disability and inclusion
  • eliminating infectious disease
  • environment
  • human origins
  • transformative justice

Innovative learning and teaching

Home to four Australian University Teachers of the Year, Griffith has long been known as an incubator of educational innovation and excellence. The University introduced Australia’s first degrees in environmental and Asian studies—and continues to rethink and reshape the way students engage with learning and develop the skills they need to succeed, long after they graduate.

Griffith offers more than 200 degrees across a range of disciplines, including:

  • architecture, construction and planning
  • business and government
  • criminology and law
  • education
  • engineering, IT and aviation
  • humanities, languages and social science
  • medicine, dentistry and health
  • music and performing arts
  • science and environment
  • visual and creative arts.

Griffith’s range of degrees are underpinned by a strong industry focus, providing students with the resources and networks they need to prepare themselves for their careers. Many of the University’s degrees offer the chance to participate in work-integrated learning such as placements, internships and field trips, offering the opportunity for students to apply the knowledge they gain in the classroom in a practical setting.

These experiences are made possible by Griffith’s extensive links to industry and communities, with a range of partnerships and collaborations helping students to make valuable connections in their field, work on research projects and gain important insights into the everyday reality of their professional journey.

Life on campus

Griffith recognises that learning is only part of its students’ university journey, and each campus hosts a vibrant, diverse and thriving community, with cafes and retail outlets, social events and sporting competitions. The University is also home to about 120 clubs and societies, reflecting the broad spectrum of passions and interests shared among its students.

Griffith’s campuses also boast a range of sporting and fitness facilities—including a world-class multisport complex at Nathan and the Gold Coast’s national-standard athletics track and aquatics centre—for the benefit of students, staff and local communities.
